What Is CAN-FD and Why Your Workshop Needs It
Blog › Diagnostics · By George Josefsson ·If you've tried to scan a 2022+ VW, Ford, or GM with your trusty ELM327 adapter and got nothing back, congratulations, you've met CAN-FD. Here's what's happening and what to do about it.
CAN vs. CAN-FD: the 30-second version
CAN (Controller Area Network) has been the standard vehicle bus protocol since the mid-2000s. It works, it's reliable, and every scan tool supports it.
CAN-FD (CAN with Flexible Data-rate) is the successor. It uses the same wiring but transmits data up to 8× faster and carries 64 bytes per frame instead of 8. Car manufacturers started adopting it around 2020–2021 because modern ECUs, especially in EVs, generate far more data than classic CAN can handle.
| Classic CAN | CAN-FD | |
|---|---|---|
| Data per frame | 8 bytes | 64 bytes |
| Bit rate | 500 kbit/s | Up to 5 Mbit/s |
| Common in | 2005–2020 models | 2021+ models |
| ELM327 support | Yes | No |
Which cars use CAN-FD?
Most European and American manufacturers have fully switched for 2022+ model years:
- VW Group (VW, Audi, Škoda, SEAT, Porsche), CAN-FD from ~2021
- Ford, CAN-FD from 2021 (Bronco, Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning)
- GM (Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac), CAN-FD from 2020 on select models
- BMW & Mercedes, CAN-FD on most 2022+ platforms
- Volvo, Mixed; SPA2 platform (EX90, new XC90) uses CAN-FD
Asian manufacturers (Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, Honda) are transitioning more slowly, many 2024 models still use classic CAN for the OBD gateway, even if internal bus segments use CAN-FD.
Why your old adapter won't work
ELM327-based adapters speak classic CAN only. When they try to communicate with a CAN-FD vehicle, one of two things happens:
- The adapter gets no response at all (the ECU won't downgrade)
- The adapter connects but returns incomplete or garbled data
This isn't a firmware problem, it's a hardware limitation. No amount of updating will make an ELM327 chip understand CAN-FD frames.
What adapter do I need?
For CAN-FD diagnostics in MechMind, you need an adapter with a CAN-FD-capable chip. Our recommended pick is the vLinker FD+, it supports both classic CAN and CAN-FD over BLE, which means it works on every car from 2001 onwards.
For a full comparison of adapters, see our OBD adapter guide or the quick selection guide.
Future-proofing your workshop
CAN-FD isn't a niche protocol, it's the new default. Every year, a larger share of the cars rolling into your workshop will require it. Investing in a CAN-FD adapter now means you won't hit a wall when a customer brings in their new ID.4 or Mustang Mach-E.
MechMind supports both protocols seamlessly. The app auto-detects whether the vehicle uses CAN or CAN-FD and adjusts accordingly, no manual configuration needed.
Try it
Check which vehicles work with OBD to see what you can read on the cars you service. Then try MechMind free and connect your first CAN-FD vehicle.
